An Open MRI scan is the safest option for patients. MRI scans use powerful magnets instead of harmful radiation like other types of scans. They do not cause any side effects and patients can resume normal routines directly after.
However, MRI scans have a severe reaction to metal. Patients with metal implants or shrapnel fragments may not be candidates for an MRI scan. Those with a Cardiac Pacemaker, Aneurysm Clips, Heart Valves, or any other metal devices may not be able to receive a scan. Pregnant Mothers may also be at risk during an MRI scan. If you have any concerns, ask one of our staff and they will be able to verify if it is safe for you to proceed with an MRI examination.
At Total Imaging you will need to provide proof of a doctor’s prescription before you receive your MRI examination.
We recommend that patients wear comfortable clothing to their MRI examination. Avoid clothing with any metal embellishments like metal buckles, sequins, or clasps. Any cosmetics, like make-up, should be removed and inform our technicians if you have any tattoos. Both cosmetics and tattoos can contain metallic particles.
Make sure to bring your insurance card, driver’s license, and prescription from your doctor with you on the day of your appointment. Any metal objects are to be left outside the MRI examination room in a secure location.
Patients may choose to bring a close family or friend to sit by their side during their MRI scan. We recommend that children be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
We will not start your MRI scan until you are comfortably positioned. Our technicians may provide you with a special foot or headrest depending on the area to be scanned. As your MRI is in progress, you may hear a lite rumbling sound as the machine does its job. Our technicians will remain in contact with you throughout the examination.
Try to remain as still as you can during your MRI scan. Any significant movement will blur the images received by the MRI machine.

Your results will be delivered to your doctor within 24 hours of the completion of your MRI scan. Please do not ask our staff members about the results of your scan as they are prohibited from discussing this with patients. Your doctor will be able to go over your results with you.
